The head of Sweden's second largest political party, the Sweden Democrats, has called for a reassessment of the country's relationship with the European Union (EU). Jimmie
Akesson criticized the EU's expansion of power, arguing that it allows politicians from other countries to make decisions about Swedes' lives. He suggested that Sweden should seek more exemptions from EU laws and policies, although he did not call for a "Swexit" vote.
Akesson warned that the EU might impose more liberal immigration policies on Sweden, which has become increasingly strict on asylum applications.
The Sweden Democrats have significant influence in Sweden's right-of-centre government and have been able to push for tougher immigration rules and weaker climate change targets.
