As Denmark prepares to assume the rotating presidency of the EU Council on July 1st, the country is setting its sights on a results-driven term with a clear focus on security
and unity—particularly in support of Ukraine.
Speaking at a joint press conference in Copenhagen with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, European Parliament President Roberta Metsola expressed strong confidence in Denmark’s ability to lead effectively. She emphasized that the six-month presidency should be marked by concrete outcomes, noting Denmark’s reputation as a pragmatic and consensus-oriented EU member.
“I have no doubt that Denmark’s presidency will be successful and focused on delivering results,” Metsola said.
Frederiksen echoed that ambition, listing several priorities for the term but underlining that unwavering support for Ukraine remains central.
“We must ensure a strong and secure Europe,” she stated, a sentiment Metsola reinforced by saying, “Europe’s security begins with Ukraine.”
As part of the presidency, Danish ministers will lead negotiations between member states and represent the EU Council in legislative talks with the European Parliament. The backdrop of ongoing geopolitical tensions—especially the war in Ukraine—adds urgency to Denmark’s leadership role.
Public opinion in Denmark aligns with this agenda. A recent Epinion survey for the Confederation of Danish Industry (DI) showed that nearly 60% of Danes believe security should be the top focus of the presidency. Reducing Europe’s reliance on Russian gas was also identified as a leading concern.
DI CEO Lars Sandahl Sørensen welcomed the strong joint message from Frederiksen and Metsola, viewing it as a clear signal of the EU’s intent to bolster its defense capabilities and become more strategically independent, particularly from the United States.
Sørensen called for increased efficiency in the European defense sector, including coordinated procurement and smoother export and certification processes. He also highlighted the strategic importance of integrating Ukraine’s defense industry into the broader European framework.
“Ukraine brings both innovation and front-line experience. Integrating their defense sector is vital—not just for Ukraine, but for Europe as a whole,” Sørensen said.
