In commemoration of the 70th anniversary of the European Parliament, President Roberta Metsola and prominent Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) gathered at the

Alongside President Metsola, leaders of the Parliament's political groups, members of the Bureau, and chairs of committees were among the distinguished guests attending the ceremony. The event, scheduled for Wednesday at 19:00, will be held at the Royal Palace.

The significance of the event stems from the historical context of the European Parliament's establishment. On September 10, 1952, the inaugural gathering of the Common Assembly of the European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC) took place, consisting of 78 appointed parliamentarians representing the national parliaments of member states.

Subsequently, with the creation of the European Economic Community and the European Atomic Energy Community, the Common Assembly underwent expansion and was renamed the "European Parliamentary Assembly" in 1958. Finally, in 1962, it adopted its current name as the "European Parliament."

The celebration at the Royal Palace not only acknowledges the 70-year journey of the European Parliament but also serves as a reminder of the vital role it plays in shaping European Union legislation and democratic representation. It is a moment to reflect on the progress achieved and the challenges ahead as the European Parliament continues to uphold its commitment to the people of Europe.
