Estonia is paving the way for citizens to cast their votes through a dedicated app, with the government endorsing a decree set for parliamentary debate. The envisioned app,

slated for potential use in the June 2024 European elections, is yet to have specific versions developed for major smartphone systems, a decision left to the electoral commission.

Emphasizing technological neutrality, Tiit Riisalo, the Minister for Economic and Digital Affairs, asserted that the app-based voting method would be as secure as traditional paper voting or online alternatives.

Estonia, an early adopter of online voting in 2005, hopes to further advance its digital voting options despite global skepticism surrounding electronic voting reliability. Photo by Alejandro Escamilla, alejandroescamilla, Wikimedia commons.
