In a keynote address at the Europe at the Crossroads event on Tuesday, European Parliament President Roberta Metsola laid out her vision for a smarter, stronger, and safer
Europe, calling for bold reform and renewed ambition.
"Time to move forward—together"
Declaring that “the time of hypothetical crossroads is over,” Metsola emphasized that Europe must now move decisively forward and act with unity. She argued for a more pragmatic and self-aware EU—one that supports its industries, reduces unnecessary regulation, and prioritizes innovation over red tape.
She warned against complacency in the face of populism and urged institutions to be more in touch with citizens’ expectations. “We must change our mindset and reset our priorities,” she said, urging the EU to act more decisively, confidently, and courageously.
A manifesto for renewal
Reflecting on the recent European elections, Metsola noted that while the political center had held, polarization is rising. “It would be foolish to ignore the warning signs,” she said.
“We need the political courage to prove Europe is still rising—open for business, ideas, and new solutions. That’s how we silence the cynics.”
Towards a smarter Europe
Metsola highlighted the importance of competitiveness to protect European freedoms and social protections. She called for an environment where ideas can thrive, businesses can grow, and failures are seen as part of innovation—not barriers to it.
She argued that Europe must simplify its bureaucracy to let entrepreneurs, researchers, and tech leaders lead. “The simplification agenda should spark a new European era,” she said, pointing to the upcoming Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF) as a catalyst for economic momentum.
She also warned against bypassing parliamentary oversight through treaty loopholes, insisting that democratic accountability must remain central. “A smarter Europe strengthens the role of Parliament,” she said.
A stronger Europe
Metsola called for a more outward-looking Europe, especially in its trade and strategic alliances. “A comprehensive deal with the United States should be our goal. No alliance has delivered more prosperity or shared values,” she stated.
She also urged deeper ties with Canada and the UK, saying, “Yes, Brexit happened. But these extraordinary times demand new thinking. A strong strategic partnership with the UK will benefit all of us.”
A safer Europe
On defence, Metsola emphasized that higher spending alone won’t guarantee security. “We need strategic cooperation across national defence industries,” she said. “Long-term thinking must replace short-term fixes.”
She reaffirmed Europe's commitment to Ukraine, noting recent solidarity visits by European leaders on Europe Day. “Every Member State now sees the need for Europe to shape its own destiny in an increasingly unstable world.”
Closing on optimism
Metsola concluded with a hopeful message: “Europe remains the greatest political project in history. It’s still the best place to live, raise a family, and innovate. We have everything—talent, capital, and drive—to lead and renew.” Photo by © European Union, 1998 – 2025, Wiimedia commons.
